biography

Richie Kohan is a composer for film, TV, trailers, and other media. His versatile style and deep understanding of harmony and melody in styles ranging from early music to 20th century classical, Jazz, and Rock, has given him the opportunity to score equally wide ranging projects, from animation, to action, comedy, and drama.

His recent projects include scoring the hit Netflix animated series, “Creature Cases” (top 10 in Netflix kids for 6 weeks), additional composing for features and series such as Prime’s “Invincible” (99% on Rotten Tomatoes), Paramount animated feature “Under The Boardwalk”, comedies “House Party” and “Good Burger 2”, and action/horror/comedy, “Cocaine Bear”. Other works he has collaborated on include Ghost in The Shell, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Lego Star Wars, The Netflix How To Train Your Dragon Series, and Disney’s “A Real Bug’s Life”, with composers Clint Mansell, Mark Mothersbaugh, Owen Pallett, John Paesano, Ryan Shore, Mike Kramer, Daniele Luppi, and Federico Jusid.

Kohan’s music has been used in trailer campaigns for M3gan, Spiderman - Into the Spiderverse, John Wick 2 and 3, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Mary Queen of Scots, X-Men: Apocalypse, The Foreigner, The Legend of Tarzan, Sully, A Monster Calls, Sicario, Nightcrawler, The Walk, and many others, he has done trailer adaptations for composers Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard, and Hans Zimmer, and pop artists Desiigner, Florence and The Machine, Common, The XX, Big KRIT, Odesza, and Kieza.

Richie’s musical life began as a Jazz, Classical, and Rock guitarist, studying at UCLA under Kenny Burrell and Peter Yates, and continuing In New York at the New School University with modern jazz legends including Mark Turner and Ben Street. He performed throughout New York before returning to Los Angeles, where he did session guitar work, and began his cinematic chamber rock ensemble, Hour of The Shipwreck, which had a devout local and international following among “prog” aficionados. The cinematic nature of that band was a natural stepping-stone to his pursuit of composition and orchestration for film and TV. In addition to his hired work, Richie is also developing his passion project, “The Sorceress”, a dark fantasy opera/musical, into a feature film.
